Forest Retreat & Spa Complex
We’ve always considered that Valcea county has a huge touristic potential, but is still underrated. After Moldova, it has the most monasteries in the country, perfect for the ecumenical tourist. You also have balneary tourism for those who want to treat different diseases at Călimănești, Căciulata, Băile Govora, Băile Olănești or Salina Ocnele Mari. For those who love the mountain and going on hikes we have Mount Cozia with Cozia National Park, Brezoi, Voineasa, Vidra montain resorts and Transalpina road. If you like wine, you’re in luck because Dragasani is one of the most well known vineyards in the country and its wineries are waiting for you to taste their famous wines.Of course I don’t have to tell you more about Horezu and its famous pottery craftsmen. And now, in Maciuca village we have the first spa that rivals the ones found in luxury hotels. Now, you might wonder ”What am I suppose to do there?”. Sure, there is not much to do in the village itself, but most likely you won’t go there to visit, but to relax and forget about the city agitation. Forest Retreat & Spa Complex is situated in the middle of nature and from your window you can see the hills that surround the whole propriety. The official opening will take place on March 3rd but we were able to go a little sooner because we’d seen the official pictures and we were extremely curious to see what it’s like. But let’s start from the beginning. Besides the spa, the complex also hosts a small hotel, a mini football field and 2 clay tennis courts (we can’t wait to try them when it’s warmer outside). The main attraction is of course the indoor pool, with a 1.30 to 1.63 m depth and a 29-30* Celsius temperature. There’s a jacuzzi area with hydromassage and one with cervical massage for those who have back problems. There’s also a heated outdoor pool. Of course there’s also a sauna. There are 2 wet ones and 2 dry ones with an ice fountain outside, emotional showers and a dry fog shower. One of the most interesting rooms is the relaxation one, with natural moss on the walls. You’ll feel very Zen laying on the lounge chairs, listening to relaxing music and imagining that you’re on a rainforest. Like any other wellness & spa center, you can enjoy various types of massages and detox or stress reducing treatments. And if you’re not convinced yet, there’s also a room with salt on the walls, perfect for those with respiratory problems. There’s also a gym where you’ll have a personal trainer and a bio bar with fresh juices and all sorts of organic goodies. The locker rooms are nicely decorated and have 3 showers for women and 2 for men. You can open your locker with a bracelet that you’ll receive at the reception area. These are the prices after the official opening:
- 60 lei (13.5 €) from Monday to Thursday;
- 75 lei (16.5 €) from Friday to Sunday;
- 80 lei (17.5 €) for gym only.
You can also opt for monthly passes, the prices for 1 month being:

- Gym and swimming pool 420 lei (93 €)
- Spa and swimming pool 420 lei (93 €)
- Swimming pool, spa and gym 490 lei (108 €)
Children under 16 years old only have access in the pool area with 50% discount. If you stay on the hotel in the complex (50€ double room with breakfast), you can enjoy all the spa services for free. We really enjoyed the complex and made us think differently about countryside life. In a small village in Valcea, Romania, with a 3 million € investment, partially financed by EU founds, you can have a Wellness & Spa Center that is usually destined for big cities or fancy hotels in famous resorts. We like it and we can’t wait to come back!
